# Eye care for First Responders

Emergency work puts vision under conditions nothing else does: smoke, dust, night, physical exertion and protective equipment. Correction has to work without being managed.

Glasses are a liability in emergency work. They fog under exertion, they do not fit under respiratory protection, and they come off when things get physical.

Contact lenses solve the fit problem and create others. Smoke and dust get trapped against the eye, and long shifts dry lenses out.

Ortho-K removes the equipment from the equation entirely. Correction happens during sleep, and the working shift involves nothing on the eye at all. That combination is why it appeals so strongly to this group.

## What matters most

**Protective equipment fit**

Respiratory protection and glasses do not coexist well. Correction that requires no eyewear removes the conflict.

**Smoke and particulate**

Contact lenses trap smoke particles against the eye surface. Overnight correction avoids that entirely.

**Vision standards**

Corrected vision requirements are assessable, and the documentation needed can be provided.

## Questions and answers
**Is Ortho-K reliable enough for this work?**

Correction holds for roughly 24 hours per night of wear. Consistency depends on consistent overnight wear, which is worth being realistic about with an irregular schedule.

**What if I get exposure during a call?**

For chemical exposure, irrigate immediately for at least fifteen minutes before anything else, then seek care. Same day assessment is available.
