# Eye care for Night Shift Workers

> "My eyes feel terrible and my schedule makes normal eye care difficult."

Night shift work combines dry indoor air, artificial lighting and disrupted sleep, all of which affect the ocular surface. Driving home in daylight after a night shift also puts specific demands on vision.

Night work is hard on eyes in ways that are rarely discussed. Air conditioned indoor environments through the small hours, sustained artificial lighting, screens, and a sleep pattern that disrupts the natural overnight recovery the ocular surface depends on.

The commute is its own problem. Driving home into low morning sun after a twelve hour shift, tired, is a genuinely demanding visual task, and glare control matters more than most people realise.

Ortho-K works for shift workers, with one caveat worth knowing upfront: it needs a consistent sleep period of around six hours, whenever that falls. Irregular patterns are worth discussing before fitting rather than after.

## What matters most

**Dry eye from shift environments**

Air conditioning, artificial light and disrupted sleep all contribute. Evaluating the mechanism is what makes treatment effective.

**The drive home**

Low morning sun after a night shift is demanding. Polarised prescription sunglasses make a substantial difference.

**Ortho-K with irregular hours**

It works with any sleep timing, but it needs consistency and around six hours. Worth an honest conversation at the assessment.

## Where to start

- [Dry eye evaluation](https://eyedoctorphoenixaz.com/specialty-eye-care/dry-eye): Shift environments are hard on the tear film
- [Prescription sunglasses](https://eyedoctorphoenixaz.com/eyeglasses-and-eyewear/prescription-sunglasses): The drive home into low sun
- [Ortho-K](https://eyedoctorphoenixaz.com/ortho-k/ortho-k-for-adults): Correction that happens while you sleep, whenever that is

## Questions and answers
**Can I get an appointment that fits my schedule?**

The office is open Monday to Thursday 9 to 6 and Friday 8 to 5. Mention your shift pattern when booking and the front desk will find something workable.

**Does Ortho-K work if I sleep during the day?**

Yes. What matters is a consistent sleep period of around six hours, not what time of day it happens.
