# Eye care for Veterans

TRICARE is accepted here. Dr Sincennes trained in a Veterans Affairs clinic, and service related concerns including blast exposure, dry eye and traumatic brain injury related vision problems are familiar ground.

Service related vision issues are their own category. Blast exposure can cause retinal and optic nerve damage that presents years later. Traumatic brain injury frequently produces convergence and focusing problems that are missed entirely by standard testing. Dry eye is disproportionately common among veterans, often related to medication and to environmental exposure during service.

None of that is exotic here. It is assessed the same way anything else is: properly, with enough time, and by someone who has seen it before.

## What matters most

**Blast exposure history**

Retinal and optic nerve effects can present years later. Retinal imaging and OCT establish a documented baseline.

**Post concussion vision problems**

Convergence insufficiency and focusing dysfunction are common after traumatic brain injury and are frequently missed on standard testing.

**Dry eye**

Disproportionately common among veterans, often medication related. Evaluating the mechanism is what makes treatment work.
